    1. Class (Boston/Grub Street Writers): How to Write a Lot
      6:15 pm – 9:15 pm

**Suitable for all writers, including fiction, nonfiction, blogging, grants, and academic writers**

Why do some writers seem to write effortlessly, turning out page after page, chapter after chapter, and book after book, while so many others struggle over every word? The difference often comes down to how one relates to one’s work. If you feel a lot of fear and ambivalence when you write, or set too-high expectations for productivity or quality, then writing will probably be hard. But if you can avoid those traps, it becomes easier and even a joy. Through workshops and exercises, Hillary Rettig (The 7 Secrets of the Prolific) will teach you how to do just that. We’ll begin by identifying the forces that create procrastination and blocks, including our own fears, damaging societal messages, and the pernicious habits of perfectionism and negativity. Then we’ll work on solutions, including “compassionate objectivity,” writing without hesitation, writing through “the wall,” and using timers and other tools.

    1. So You Want to Indie Publish (6-Week Series)
      10:00 am – 12:00 pm

      6 Wednesdays, Starting January 11, 3:00-6:00 p.m.
Indie publishing is hot – and with good reason. Authors love the sense of control they have over their work – the ability to choose everything from covers to release dates to marketing strategies – and they also love keeping up to 80% of the revenue for themselves, versus the 5% to 10% of sales most publishers pay out in royalties. But how to do it? This class takes you step-by-step through the process of indie publishing ebooks and paper books. We’ll begin by overviewing the indie publishing field-– a dynamic “wild west” landscape where technologies and business models are constantly changing-– and outlining the most common strategies for self-publishing ebooks and paper books. Then we’ll delve into the specifics of e- and paper publishing, and also provide abundant strategies and information for marketing and selling your book.

Grub Street workshops fill up fast, so register early.

    1. Class (Telephone): Academic Writing Catalyst Program
      5:15 am – 7:15 am

For students, faculty and other academic writers.

New session starting February 6, 2012

I’m VERY excited to announce that I am starting a new telephone-based support program specifically for faculty, graduate students and other academic writers. Whether you are working to complete a thesis, book, or coursework, the Academic Writing Catalyst Program will not only provide weekly support and a fantastic, caring community, but tools and techniques that will boost your productivity and lower your stress, now and throughout your career.

Each 90-minute call will start with a 20-minute lesson/discussion on a particular productivity barrier and/or technique. Then we’ll do a round-table discussion in which each participant discusses his or her progress over the last week, and achievements and challenges. I’ll offer advice and insight, and additional valuable advice and insight will come from the other participants.

As we’ve discovered in the many writing classes I’ve taught over the years, there’s a real benefit to working on your productivity challenges in a group of like-minded and compassionate peers. A peer group not only “normalizes” your underproductivity, but helps you gain confidence and perspective as you watch (and help) other good people make progress on their productivity challenges.

Calls will be weekly, and last 90 minutes: days and times to be determined. Since it’s a new program, I’m offering the first cycle at a discount: $200 for 8 calls, plus you’ll get a free copy of The 7 Secrets of the Prolific ebook, which I’ll be asking you to do some readings from. The maximum number of participants is 8, so register early. (Use the PayPal button, below, or email me for a mailing address for your check.) If at any point you decide the program isn’t for you, I’ll refund the balance, minus $25 per call you’ve already participated in and applicable PayPal or other fees.

All discussions are to be kept strictly confidential, and all participants will be asked to agree to a statement of confidentiality before starting.

The Academic Writing Catalyst Program is truly an investment that will pay off now and into the future, so I hope you will guarantee yourself a spot by prepaying now.

I look forward to joining you on the call.

      Hillary

    1. Hyannis (Cape Cod), MA – Sat, March 3 – Indie Publishing Workshop (all-day)
      Mar 3

Scheduled for Saturday, March 3 from 9:30-3:00 p.m. at the Cape Codder Resort on Route 132 in Hyannis, the workshop features experts who will overview of the field, explain how books and manuscripts are converted into digital form for e-readers, and provide practical information about how you can become a successful e-publisher of your own work.

The day begins with a complimentary Continental breakfast from 9-9:30 a.m. followed by a presentation by Digital Scanning Inc., established in Scituate in 1993. Company representatives, Brian Shillue, Chip Musson and Russell Shepherd will walk workshop participants through the background of e-publishing and the steps you’ll need to take to convert your manuscripts into digital files ready for e-publications. Following their presentations, and a question and answer period, we’ll break for lunch at 12:30 p.m.

The afternoon session of the workshop begins at 1:30 with a presentation by Hillary Rettig, an author, indie publisher and teacher at Boston’s Grub Street writing school. She will discuss the latest trends in the indie publishing field-– a dynamic “wild west” landscape where technologies and business models are constantly changing-– and outline the most common strategies for self-publishing ebooks and paper books. During her presentation, Hillary will delve into the specifics of e- and paper publishing, as well as providing strategies and information for marketing and selling your book. (Hillary’s latest book, The 7 Secret of the Prolific:The Definitive Guide to Overcoming Procrastination, Perfectionism and Writers Block will also be on sale that day.)

The fee for the CCWC’s day-long workshop is $60.00 for member, $70.00 for non-members. Please register by Monday, February 27 by emailing at writers@capecodwriterscenter.org with the heading “ E-Publishing” or by calling the office at (508) 420-0200.

Looking forward to seeing you on March 3rd – and soon afterwards seeing your work on electronic bookstores!
